A message from Eric Schneiderman, New York Attorney General.

Dear Friend,
New York has a long history of welcoming immigrants and embracing diversity.
That’s why, in anticipation of potential changes to federal immigration enforcement practices under a Trump administration, I issued legal guidance to local governments to become “sanctuary” jurisdictions that protect their immigrant communities and promote public safety.
Blah

Public safety relies on trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve – and no local law enforcement agency should have to undercut that trust to carry out President Trump’s draconian immigration policies.
Our guidance gives local governments the tools they need to protect immigrant communities from any overreach by federal agencies, and complements my office’s other continued work to stand up for our all New Yorkers, from law enforcement guidance on prosecuting hate crimes to ensuring equal access to education regardless of immigration status.
Now, more than ever, we must fight for our values of inclusion and pluralism.
Sincerely,

Eric Schneiderman
P.S. Last week, I spoke at the National Action Network’s annual Martin Luther King Day Public Policy Forum. As we look towards the next four years, I’d like to share my thoughts on the revolutionary tradition MLK Jr. embodied. My full remarks can be found here.
